Picture Encyclopedia archive - installation

Picture Encyclopedia is both an independent work and an image archive for other projects. As an inde- pendent work, I present the sheets in the form of wall-filling installations, the number of sheets and the structure of the hanging is variable.
Since 1982 I have been collecting and archiving image motifs, taken from packaging of consumer goods, which I stick on Chromolux cardboard in various DIN formats, mainly on DIN A5. In Mai 2025 I have gained an archive of 10,000 sheets.
The only intervention is to cut the motif out of the context of the packaging. The redundant message of the representation on the packaging is isolated from its environment and traced back to its image value. And thus becomes an examination of how we perceive, remember and represent people, animals, plants, landscapes and objects. These motifs: drawings, photographs, graphics and paintings do not claim to be art, not even that of ambitious graphic design. They are usually only perceived unconsciously and almost always end up in the trash immediately. And yet they reflect the forms of representation and many motifs of art history. They are inconspicuous documents of cultural history and, since they are taken from packaging from all over the world, also show the specificity of the respective culture.

In Bildlexikon handelt es sich sowohl um eine eigenständige Arbeit, wie um ein Bildarchiv für andere Projekte. Als eigenständige Arbeit präsen- tiere ich die Blätter in Form wandfüllender Installa- tionen, die Anzahl der Blätter und die Struktur der Hängung ist variabel.
Seit 1982 sammelte und seit 1992 archivierte ich Bildmotive, Verpackungen von Konsumartikeln entnommen, die ich auf Chromolux-Karton in ver- schiedenen DIN-Formaten aufklebte, überwiegend auf DIN A5. Im Mai 2025 habe ich ein Archiv von 10,000 Blättern gewonnen.
Der einzige Eingriff ist das Herausschneiden des Motivs aus dem Zusammenhang der Verpackung. Die redundante Botschaft der Darstellung auf der Verpackung wird von ihrer Umgebung isoliert und auf ihren Bildwert zurückgeführt. Und wird damit zu einer Auseinandersetzung darüber, wie wir Menschen, Tiere, Pflanzen, Landschaften und Objekte wahrnehmen, erinnern und darstellen. Diese Motive: Zeichnungen, Fotografien, Grafiken und Malereien haben nicht den Anspruch Kunst zu sein, ja noch nicht einmal den von ambitio- niertem Grafikdesign. Sie werden meist nur unbe- wusst wahrgenommen und landen fast immer so- gleich im Abfall. Und doch spiegeln sie die Dar- stellungsformen und viele Motive der Kunstge- schichte. Sie sind unauffällige Dokumente von Kulturgeschichte und zeigen, da sie Verpackun- gen aus der ganzen Welt entnommen sind, auch das Spezifische der jeweiligen Kultur.

Encyclopédie d’images c’est à la fois un travail indépendant et une archive d’images pour d’autres projets. En tant qu’œuvre indépendante, je pré- sente les feuilles sous forme d’installations de remplissage mural, le nombre de feuilles et la structure de la tenture est variable.
Depuis 1982, je collectionne et j’archive des
motifs d’images, des emballages provenant de biens de consommation, que je colle sur du carton Chromolux dans différents formats DIN, principalement sur DIN A5. En mai 2025 j’ai acquis une archive de 9950 feuilles.
La seule intervention consiste à découper le motif hors du contexte de l’emballage. Le message re- dondant de la représentation sur l’emballage est isolé de son environnement et retracé jusqu’à sa valeur d’image. Et devient ainsi un examen de la façon dont nous percevons, nous souvenons et représentons les gens, les animaux, les plantes, les paysages et les objets. Ces motifs: dessins, photographies, graphiques et peintures ne préten- dent pas être de l’art, pas même celui d’un design graphique ambitieux. Ils ne sont généralement perçus qu’inconsciemment et finissent presque toujours à la poubelle immédiatement. Et pour- tant, ils reflètent les formes de représentation et de nombreux motifs de l’histoire de l’art. Ce sont des documents discrets de l’histoire culturelle et, comme ils sont tirés d’emballages du monde entier, ils montrent également la spécificité de la culture respective.
